Cecil Cooper
was born in 1946 in Hanover, Jamaica. One of the early graduates of the Jamaica School of Art (1966), he gained his BFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York (1976), returning there for his MFA in 1993. He returned to Jamaica in 1980 to join the staff of the Jamaica School of Art, becoming Head of the Painting Department the following year, a position he holds to this day. In 1993 he was awarded the Bronze Musgrave Medal. As one of Jamaica's most recognised artists, he exhibits widely in Jamaica and overseas. The first of his 3 solo exhibitions at Harmony Hall was in 1986. He is also Jamaica's leading tenor, living and working in Jack's Hill above Kingston.
